Digging in a public road or pavement in Cornwall needs permission from the highway authority. Whether you need a private water, sewer or utility connection under the road, or a dropped kerb for a new driveway, Iktin Solutions carries out the work in the highway and reinstates it to the required standard.
What is a Section 50 licence?
A Section 50 licence, issued under the New Roads and Street Works Act 1991 (NRSWA), allows a private individual or company to place, keep or repair apparatus such as pipes and cables in the public highway. In Cornwall these are issued by Cornwall Council as the highway authority.
Street works we carry out
Typical jobs include:
Private water and sewer connections under the road
Cable and duct crossings
Dropped kerbs and vehicle crossovers
Traffic management for works in the highway
Reinstatement of carriageways and footways
Surfacing and kerbing
Dropped kerbs
A dropped kerb (vehicle crossover) lets you drive legally across the pavement to your driveway. You will normally need approval from Cornwall Council before the kerb is lowered, and the work must be done to the council's specification. We can install the crossover and surfacing once approval is in place.

Frequently asked questions
Do I need a Section 50 licence?
If you need to dig in the public highway to install or connect private pipes or cables, you will normally need a Section 50 licence from Cornwall Council before work starts.
Do I need permission for a dropped kerb in Cornwall?
Yes. Lowering a kerb to create a vehicle access normally needs approval from Cornwall Council, and in some cases planning permission as well.
Who reinstates the road afterwards?
We do. Reinstatement of the carriageway or footway is part of the job and is carried out to the required highway specification.
How long does a dropped kerb take to install?
The work on site is often completed in a few days, but the approval process can take several weeks, so it is worth applying early.
